On May 8, 2023, Planned Parenthood and its abortion industry allies officially announced a new citizens’ petition initiative to place a proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution on the 2024 General Election ballot.
If this proposed “Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion” makes it onto the 2024 General Election ballot and is approved by 60% or more of voters, then it would engraft an explicit “right” to abortion (up until the moment of birth) in our state’s governing document. Our pro-life Legislature and Governor would be prohibited from making Florida totally abortion free, and all preexisting legislative prohibitions/regulations on abortion would also become null and void.
The pro-aborts are utilizing a mix of paid and volunteer petition circulators. These petition gatherers will need to collect at least 891,523 valid signatures from Florida voters in at least one-half of Florida’s 28 Congressional districts by February 1, 2024 (but more realistically by December 31, 2023).
Additionally, the Florida Supreme Court will ultimately have to approve the proposed constitutional amendment for ballot placement by looking at a number of factors, including whether the proposed amendment meets the Florida Constitution’s single-subject-matter requirement, whether its title and language are sufficiently clear, and whether it is facially invalid under the U.S. Constitution.
Although the pro-abortion petition drive is well-funded, that fact alone is not a guarantee that it will be successful, given the hurdles described above.
There are a number of things we – as grassroots pro-lifers – can do to disrupt this insidious pro-abortion citizens’ petition initiative. The most important thing is that we must be PROACTIVE – not reactive. That means not waiting around until it is too late. We can and we must STOP this proposed constitutional amendment from reaching the 2024 General Election ballot.
This webpage will serve as a clearinghouse for our efforts. It contains many of the ideas developed during Florida Voice for the Unborn’s First Annual Dobbs Day Banquet & Workshop on June 24, 2023, which was attended by close to 70 pro-life grassroots advocates from all across our Sunshine State.
